Port Vale (@2.5) vs Plymouth (@2.8)

Our Prediction:

Port Vale will win

Port Vale – Plymouth Match Prediction | 15-09-2019 10:00

The club has taken seven points from three games at home this season and will be hoping Vale Park can become something of a fortress, and with Plymouth having lost their last two away games, there is some cause for hope. After a change of ownership in the summer, Port Vale have got off to a satisfying enough start. Though 14th place might not look so courageous for a club nicknamed The Valiants, a mid-table finish would be sufficient for a club who have finished 20th in League Two for two seasons in a row.

They just need to service them properly. If they can defend slightly better, Askeys side can be optimistic; they have scored in every game this season apart from the 1-0 away defeat to 2nd placed Newport in their most recent game. In strikers Tom Pope and Richie Bennett, Port Vale have two towering bullies who know how to score goals at this level. John Askey did okay to keep the club in the division after his appointment in February but his 28% win record at Vale Park is deflating and a stronger defensive effort is necessary if he is to avoid a frustrating time at the club. Already, they have thrown the lead away four times and this has cost them nine points. Port Vale have only kept one clean sheet this season and need to banish their leakiness if they want to secure a decent finish this term.

Both teams scored in four of Port Vales and five of Plymouths last six matches and were expecting more of the same this weekend. The form and performances of both clubs in recent weeks also suggest Vale are the most likely winners this weekend and backs our prediction of 2-1 final score, as Port Vale have won three of their last five matches and Plymouth have lost their last two away games.

The hosts have a very good record against their guests, especially in their most recent encounters, and this fixture has produced goals for both teams on three of the last four occasions. Port Vale have looked stronger in defence than their guests over the last month or so and this is where we feel the game will be won by the home side. Were confident that both teams will score on Saturday and have predicted a final scoreline of 2-1 in favour of Port Vale.

Lowe cherrypicked several players to join him at Plymouth who were instrumental in his promotion with Bury last season and will be hoping they can get him out of this division again. Following a somewhat surprising relegation last season, Plymouth reinforced with talent belonging in a division higher than League Two: Jose Baxter, Danny Mayor and Joe Edwards all add to side brimming with talent. Ryan Lowe took the helm of Plymouth in the summer with a clear mandate: challenge near the top of the table. Plymouth sit 8th on 11 points but are already four points off 3rd placed Crewe and an improvement on seven points in their last five games is necessary. So far, they havent been too far off the pace.

All Port Vale v Plymouth Argyle game predictions, stats and user poll are shown below including the latest game odds. Our tip is therefore for a hard-fought 1-1 draw when the referee blows the full-time whistle. Lets see how it plays out, but a draw is looking likely to us. Were thinking that Plymouth Argyle and Port Vale could both end up scoring in what appears to be a good match-up, with little separating these two teams.

Since the opening match against Crewe, Plymouth have dominated possession in their games, even having 73% of it against Newport. What is striking is Plymouths possession-based style. On paper, Plymouth are the stronger team, but Port Vale will make it hard for Plymouth to play their way, and this could lead to an upset. But being a League Two Barcelona might not work against a Port Vale side who committed 21 fouls in their last game (for comparison, Plymouth committed seven).

For sure, they are a side who blow hot and cold. It is worth bearing in mind that Plymouth have only won one of their last seven games in all competitions. Though they opened their season with impressive victories over Crewe and Colchester, Plymouth have since slumped to defeat at the hands of struggling Northampton and suffered the ignominy of a home draw to 22nd placed Oldham.

Two of Port Vales last three wins were also by final scores of 2-1 and Plymouth have conceded at least two goals in four of their last six matches, which is why were confident that Vale will score at least twice on Saturday. Other than the heavy defeat at Grimsby, Port Vales defence has been doing a decent job of late with one clean sheet and only letting in one goal per game in three of their last six matches.
