Stefanie Voegele – Kristyna Pliskova Match Prediction | 10-09-2019 05:00

Golubic is a mystery on the dirt as she has had two very nice seasons, going 14-7 in 2013 and 12-5 in 2016 which included her only WTA title in Gstaad, but plenty of seasons with mixed results. Rus has one ITF clay title and has produced decent clay results over the last two years, but will have a tough task on Monday. Golubic gets it done in her home country. Last season she went 9-8 and will look to improve on that record starting this week. The Swiss had a pretty successful hard court season, going 17-6 with an Indian Wells Challenger title, and will look to build upon that momentum when she hits the dirt. Victorija Golubic will start her clay season in her home country as she gets ready to take on Arantxa Rus in the first round of the Samsung Open. Her first round opponent, Rus, was coming off the most successful year of her career, in 2018, but has not been able to build off that as she has gone just 4-7 to start the season.

Vera Lapko is only three years older than her Polish opponent and has unfulfilled potential to realise. The change to clay has brought about rejuvenation in Belorussian Vera Lapko. Lapko was a not-so-lucky loser there. Granted the bulk of last seasons form was at the ITF level, but she is handling the step up in class in her youthful stride. She dropped just two games against Evgeniya Rodina last round and has seen her tenacity return. She has looked jaded at times this season, especially when losing twice in Indian Wells. 17-year-old Swiatek is 40-5 since last season on clay.

Former occupant of the 42-seat WTA in a few seasons, the Swiss player currently occupies 97th place, being very close to falling into the second place of the WTA.WTA Tournaments and ITF Wins this season, and the best result was obtained on the Indian Wells hardcover when it reached the third round, being defeated by the revelation of the competition, Bianca Andreescu. After two defeats on the grass, he comes to Lausanne after a tour of the ITF on the clay, when he came to the semifinals.

Week by week

Voegele has one career ITF clay court title and will look for her first career WTA title this week. An all Swiss matchup on Wednesday will pit Victorija Golubic vs Stefanie Voegele for a spot in the Samsung Open quarterfinals. Voegele gets once step closer and advances to the quarters. Golubic has won one WTA title, and one ITF title, on the dirt during her career. Stefanie Voegele easily knocked out the 5th seed Pauline Parmentier, on Tuesday, to advance to face her Golubic. Golubic needed a comeback, three set win, over Arantxa Rus, on Monday, and will look to advance to her second WTA quarterfinal of the season.

79% 1st serves in has contributed to her last two victories, allowing her to use her strong groundstrokes to grind out points. She is looking strong and has yet to drop a set in Lugano. French up and coming prospect Fiona Ferro is improving that first service accuracy. Voegele carries the hopes of the host nation, but should struggle against a strong server like Ferro.

Latest News

There were two upsets as Svetlana Kuznetsova, who went off at +162, knocked out countrywomen Ekaterina Alexandrova, for her first win of the season. The Samsung Open got underway with five matches on Monday and the first four matches all took three sets to decide a winner. The other slight upset was Sorana Cristea, who was even money, defeated Mona Barthel in three sets. Other winners were Alison Van Uytvanck and Viktorija Golubic who both fought off challenges from some pretty big underdogs.

Svetlana Kuznetsova returned to action for the first time since September and picked up a three set win over Ekaterina Alexandrova. The Swiss will have to make it through another veteran, who has been dealing with injuries, in the second round. Timea Bacsinszky lost just two games in her first round matchup, on Tuesday, and will look to advance to her second quarterfinal of the season with a win on Wednesday. The veteran Swiss has been dealing with injuries over the last few seasons and is look to win her first title since 2016. Kuznetsova, the 2009 French Open champion, is just two seasons removed from finishing the year ranked #12 and will look to get back into that form this tournament. I like Kuznetsova to win and extend her H2H record 5-0.

Kristyna Pliskova is two wins away from the first clay court title of her 12 year career. One of the budding starts of tennis is through to her first semifinal on the main tour. 17-year-old Iga Swiatek has looked really solid this week and is certainly building off her 20-4 record on the dirt last season. Swiatek looks like someone who will challenge for French Open titles for years and she has a great chance to win her first WTA title this week. Pliskova will be tough, but Swiatek gets to her first final. The Czech has posted the two best clay court seasons of her career, the last two seasons, and looks primed to continue that form.
