Our Prediction:

Jelena Ostapenko will win

Xiaodi You – Jelena Ostapenko Match Prediction | 10-09-2019 06:00

Cornet has already halted one 2018 unbeaten run after defeating Julia Goerges and will be looking for another here. Sam: A total contrast of on-court styles as the ice-cool Elise Mertens takes on the emotional but entertaining Alize Cornet. Mertens fightback from 5-0 down against Gavrilova in the first set demonstrated a steely grit that will see her advance past her geographical neighbor.

She beat wildcard Katy Dunne 6-3 7-6 to start the tournament, before disposing of Kirsten Flipkens 6-1 6-3 in the second round. She hasnt yet dropped a set during her five matches, but is also yet to face a seeded player. In the third round, she crushed Vitalia Diatchenko 6-0 6-4, before comfortably beating Aliaksandra Sasnovich 7-6 6-0. Ostapenko has had an interesting tournament. She then conquered #33 Dominika Cibulkova with a 7-5 6-4 win.

Marta Kostyuk has been breathtaking and, at just 15, can play with plenty of freedom as she has nothing to lose. Regardless of how tight she can get at Slams, this gives her enough of an edge to win. That said, Elina Svitolina presumably has a big advantage that she knows at least a little bit about how her countrywoman plays. Sam: Not every fairytale can have a happy ending.

She comes up against the more experienced Petra Martic, who had to ground out a tough straight-sets win in her second-round match against Irina-Camelia Begu. James:Luksika Kumkhum pulled off one of the upsets of the tournament when she beat Belinda Bencic in the second round. The next round will be a step too far. Lower-ranked players often get ahead of themselves when they cause a big upset at Grand Slams, and I fear that this will be the case for Kumkhum.

James:Kaia Kanepi has defied my predictions in both of the previous rounds, so I hope this one does not jinx it for her. This will be the deciding factor in this match. She, however, had to go the distance in her second round match, whereas Kanepi recorded a comfortable straight sets win over Monica Puig. The Estonian has been in wonderful form and comes up against an opponent with a beautiful one-handed backhand in Carla Suarez Navarro.

Jelena Jankovic

Kerber is a two-time Grand Slam winner and former Wimbledon finalist, but she has never been able to go all the way at the All England Club. Ostapenko, at just 21 years of age, also has a Major to her name after lifting the title in Paris last year and last year made the final eight at Wimbledon. In a battle between the two highest seeds left in the draw, Angelique Kerber and Jelena Ostapenko face off for a place in the Wimbledon final.

Nonetheless, both have impressed me this week so far, and this could be a good contest between two players who see an opportunity to put a good Grand Slam run together. James:I feel guilty when predicting this match, as I wrongly predicted both of these players second-round matches. I am giving Mertens the edge because I think that she has the mental edge over Cornet, but then again, with these two, anything can happen.

Ostapenko, in particular, is extremely aggressive, and is renowned for her high-risk high-reward game style. This will be an entertaining match to watch, with both players aggressive baseliners with the propensity to hit winners. Indeed, the Latvian made headlines last year at the Championships when it was revealed her forehands were faster, on average, than then defending champion Andy Murrays.

This match should provide a very engaging watch for the fans in New York. Both players will go for their shots and a high number of winners and unforced errors seems almost certain based on how they have played so far. But Sharapovas serve has been a cause for concern, and that should give Ostapenko a decisive advantage. This one will go to three sets, but expect Ostapenko to get it done in a tight deciding set.

But the Russian has been less error-prone, with 28 fewer unforced errors to her name. She has hit 19 double faults in her two US Open matches so far, and a similar performance from the line in this match will make it difficult for her to beat a player of Ostapenkos quality. If she can keep her game tight against Ostapenko, she will have a good chance of claiming the win. Sharapovas serve may have a large say on the outcome of this match.

Both of theseplayers are powerful hitters and as a result the fans should be treated to some entertaining tennis. Sharapova stands 11cm taller than Ostapenko, but it is the Latvian that is the more powerful. She smashed 38 winners through the defences of Petkovic before hitting an even more impressive 52 against Townsend. She made 60 against Petkovic and 47 against Townsend. But her aggression has cost her a lot of unforced errors.
